On Oct. 17, the CONVINCED. editorial desk came up with the “Laundry Line Index,” a way to gauge the mood at home by how dry the washing is. It combines towel dryness, the number of unused hangers and the gentleness of conversations about bringing the washing in, on a scale from zero to 100.

A high score means the question “Who’s folding the dry clothes?” can be gently postponed; a low score calls for an emergency family summit between the balcony and the laundry basket. That, at least, is the editorial desk’s theory. The formula may be adjusted for the weather—and the washing machine’s temperament.

When it’s time to bring the washing in, the score offers an opening line: “Looks like a peaceful folding day.” The first move is simple: fold one dry towel before it makes another trip through the laundry basket.

A story just a little more plausible than reality.— CONVINCED. Editorial Desk
